Spots of Light – France
Traveling in France four times between 2013 and 2018, I always had several pinhole cameras in my bag. I found myself mostly using a normal lens equivalent focal length. This is the way our natural eyes see and seemed perfect to center in on the spots of light I encountered. I became more attentive to the immediate scene, the light itself, and the framing. Depending on the place and time, I switched between my analogue film 4x5 inch and 6x7 cm medium format bellows pinhole cameras and digital cameras equipped with homemade pinhole body caps.
The light of France has always inspired artists. On these journeys I visited six areas all with special qualities: a friend’s old garden in Beaujolais, the lush Loue River Valley guided by a local French photographer friend, Monet’s Garden in the fall, Van Gogh’s beloved Arles, Cannes the city of film festivals, the ruins of the monastery where the 16th century French poet Pierre de Ronsard lived in harmony with nature writing and growing his now famous roses in Tours, and spent many hours walking the streets of Paris.
In these varied spots of light, I found the essence of both the present and the past.

2013と2018年の間に4回、数種のピンホール・カメラを携えてフランスに行った私だが、主に使ったのは、標準レンズと同じ焦点距離のカメラだった。自分の目で見るとおりの目前の光景、そのままの光、フレーミングに細かく注意を払い、場所と時間により、アナログフィルムの4ｘ5インチと中判6ｘ7cm、そして自分で手作りしたピンホールボディキャップが着いているデジカメラを使い分けた。
フランスの光は常に芸術家にインスピレーションを与えてきました。私が訪ねた6地域は、どこも素晴らしい特質をもっていた。ボージョレーの友人の旧い庭園。地元の写真家に案内されたルー川河畔の谷。秋のモネの庭、ゴッホが愛したアルルの町、映画祭の街カンヌ、16世紀の詩人ピエール・ド・ロンサールが住んだトゥールの僧院は詩作をし、野菜やバラの花を育てていたのだ。そしてパリの街を何時間も歩き回った。
これらの光のスポットに、私は現在と過去の真髄を見出した。
